SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - On Wednesday, August 21, Baystate Health awarded $26,000 in scholarship money to 24 local students pursuing health care careers at an event in Springfield.

The student recipients have participated in the Baystate Springfield Educational Partnership (BSEP) and are attending college in the fall. They will be attending colleges such as UMass Amherst, Springfield College, and Boston College, and are interested in pursuing career paths including medicine, nursing, pharmacy and psychology.

Tyonne Hinson, senior vice president and chief of diversity, equity and inclusion delivered the opening remarks, and graduate Augustina Amoako spoke about her BSEP experience.

BSEP's mission is to cultivate a healthcare workforce in Springfield that mirrors the diversity of the community. The program provides high school students in Springfield with hands-on learning experiences within the hospital, enabling them to explore various healthcare careers and prepare for future internships or employment opportunities.

Many BSEP students face financial barriers to higher education. BSEP scholarships help overcome this by funding their post-secondary education. Funded by Baystate Health's Community Benefits Program, these scholarships have awarded nearly $800,000 to BSEP students and alumni to date.

Baystate Health has hired over 500 BSEP alumni, with the majority working in clinical and administrative support, allied health, nursing, and graduate medical education roles. Of these 500, 287 alumni continue to be a part of the Baystate Health team.
