Background and Clinical Focus

About This Provider:

As a neurosurgeon at Baystate Health, Dr. Kalia considers himself a fierce advocate for his patients. Having been a patient himself, he only recommends surgical intervention if he thinks it is absolutely the right thing to do with a good chance of a favorable outcome for the patient. He also appreciates how difficult the healthcare system can be to navigate, and does all he can to make things go smoothly for his patients when they’re having a difficult time.
With a focus on surgical conditions of the brain and spine, Kalia has a subspecialty interest in the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia and hemifacial spasm. For his subspeciality, he proudly trained under Dr. Peter Jannetta at the University of Pittsburgh, who pioneered life-changing neurosurgery procedures for these conditions.
When he’s not helping patients, he keeps busy with his family waterskiing, wake surfing, playing racquet sports and golf, flying radio-controlled airplanes, and shooting clay targets.

Face Pain and Trigeminal Neuralgia Webinar

Severe, recurring facial pain is the main symptom of trigeminal neuralgia. This pain may include sensations of stabbing or electrical shock in the cheek or jaw. Some people mistake the pain as the result of a dental condition and have teeth removed to try to find relief. There are a variety of triggers that may set off the pain. Join Dr. Kamal Kalia, neurosurgeon, Baystate neurosurgery, Assistant Professor of Surgery, UMass-Chan Medical School-Baystate, for a discussion about trigeminal neuralgia, how it is diagnosed, the symptoms, and the treatments to bring relief.
