The team of pediatric hematology and oncology specialists at the Sadowsky Center for Children provides compassionate care and state-of-the art treatment to kids with cancer or blood disorders.

Treatment for Children with Cancer or Blood Disorders

Located at Baystate Children’s Hospital (BCH), the Sadowsky Center for Children is the place to go for family-focused and comprehensive care close to home.

We’ll work closely with you, your child, and your child’s pediatrician to create the best treatment plan. You can also rely on our Child Life Program to create a positive, welcoming atmosphere for your child and to provide additional support and education as needed.

Our experienced team diagnoses and treats children with complex and serious conditions, including:

  • Anemia
  • Bleeding disorders
  • Childhood cancers
  • Leukemia
  • Sickle cell disease
  • Thalassemia
  • Thrombosis

We also provide programs for cancer survivors to help ensure effective treatment and long-term monitoring.

We approach diagnosis, treatment, and long-term care from all angles. That means your child’s care team includes a variety of specialists and caregivers, including:

We also consider you, your child, and your child’s pediatrician important members of the team. We want you to be part of every decision.

Outpatient Hematology & Cancer Care

Your child will visit our pediatric hematologists and oncologists on an outpatient basis at the Sadowsky Center for Children. This one convenient location features:

  • Chemotherapy pharmacy
  • Child-friendly infusion suite
  • Child life specialists who can explain procedures in age-appropriate ways and help ease anxiety and concerns
  • Access to a diagnostic laboratory to help expedite treatment and blood count results
  • A procedure suite for bone marrow biopsies, spinal taps, and other procedures
  • Access to radiation therapy facilities
  • Pediatric anesthesiologists or pediatric intensivists who can provide sedation or anesthesia if needed
Inpatient Hematology & Cancer Care

Depending on your child’s condition and treatment, he or she may need to stay in the hospital for a time. BCH is the region’s only full service, accredited children's hospital. We also have a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) providing the highest level of care when needed.

The family-friendly environment of our Children's and Adolescents' Unit comforts kids and helps ease the stress of a hospital stay. Plus, it’s located in the same facility as the Sadowsky Center for Children, so you’ll find it a familiar and seamless transition.

Pediatric Cancer Survivorship Program

Cancer care doesn't stop after treatment. This program provides comprehensive and personalized education and care for your child's cancer diagnosis. We have also partnered with the Baystate pediatric endocrinology team to monitor for side effects and track of your child's growth and development after cancer treatment.

As a patient in the Survivorship Program, you can expect your team to:

  • Provide a summary of your child's cancer treatment
  • Evaluate your child for late effects from treatments (chemotherapy, radiation, surgeries, stem cell transplants)
  • Share information with you about treatment risks and related late effects
  • Stay in touch with your primary care doctor and any other specialists

Passport for Care

As a part of the program, you can find a summary of your diagnosis and treatment through the Passport for Care website. Passport For Care is a secure website that allows oncologists (cancer doctors) to upload treatment summaries and other important information about your care.

You will be able to find the most current information about your child's diagnosis, treatment, and other related medical issues. You can find information about college scholarships, financial and legal resources, and support groups.
