Mission of Service
Baystate Health is a not-for-profit, integrated health care system serving more than 850,000 people in the three western Massachusetts counties—a service area stretching from Connecticut to Vermont.
Our mission is to improve the health of the people in our communities every day, with quality and compassion.
Community Involvement and Investment
Our patients are members of a community, and so are we.
Baystate works with our community to identify, prioritize, and implement efforts to meet the health and wellness needs of our patients and the broader community.
We do this by providing care to all, every day, regardless of ability to pay—and by investing in our communities
Diversity Makes Us Strong
Baystate Health serves a community from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds, who speak more than 30 languages.
We are committed to being inclusive of everyone who passes through our doors—patients, their families and visitors, vendors and employees.
Our Academic Mission
Advancement of knowledge is integral to our mission.
The Baystate campus has eleven academic departments, and our faculty have their primary academic appointments at UMass Chan - Baystate.
Education is a top priority here—we’ve been involved in medical education for more than a century.
Research expertise in population health, clinical effectiveness and outcomes research focuses on strategies to improve population health, reduce health disparities, and make health care better integrated.
PURCH Track: Gets Medical Students Out Into the Community
In 2017, UMass Chan - Baystate launched PURCH (Population-based Urban and Rural Community Health)—an innovative approach to medical education that focuses on the complex social and environmental factors affecting health issues common to western Massachusetts' urban and rural populations.
Clinical Training Facilities
UMass Chan - Baystate leverages the entire Baystate Health integrated health system as a training platform, including:
- Baystate Medical Center, a full-service teaching hospital
- Baystate Children’s Hospital, the region’s only accredited, full-service children’s hospital
- Level 1 Trauma Center with pediatric designation
- Three community hospitals and three urban health centers

Quality and Safety Are Central To Everything We Do
We believe in complete transparency of the quality and safety data for the care we provide. Our Quality Report was one of the first of its kind in the U.S. to be transparently accountable to our community.
