PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency
The fully-accredited PGY1 Community-based Pharmacy Residency Program at Baystate Medical Center builds on your Doctor of Pharmacy education, developing your skills to practice as clinical pharmacists in the community and diverse ambulatory care settings.
Our residency provides opportunities to collaborate with other healthcare professionals while providing care in internal medicine and various specialty clinics, developing pharmacy services, advancing community pharmacy practice, and educating pharmacy students, the public, and other providers.
Graduates of the PGY1 Community-based Pharmacy Residency will be eligible for board certification and for PGY2 pharmacy residency or fellowship training (i.e. ambulatory care, geriatrics, academia or pharmacotherapy).
Outpatient Pharmacy Department and Ambulatory Care Services
Baystate Medical Center Outpatient Pharmacy Department comprises four hospital- and clinic-based outpatient pharmacies, all located in Springfield, MA. We also have a specialty pharmacy affiliated with Shields.
Our Clinical Pharmacist Practitioners manage chronic diseases at various practices and health centers throughout the organization. They work with patients' healthcare teams to manage hypertension, hyperlipidemia, asthma/COPD, diabetes, heart failure, and many others. Collaboration with interdisciplinary teams is emphasized at Baystate to improve patient outcomes.
Resident Activities
Our graduates will be self-directed learners in the areas of service, teaching, and quality improvement. You will be engaged in the following activities:
Participate in health fairs and community health seminars.
Conduct disease state management programs: Diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, COPD, heart failure, etc.
- Medication therapy management
- Precept/mentor pharmacy students
- Complete a research project
- Complete a year-long major project
- Attend management and department head meetings
- Participate in practice management projects and discussions
- Attend the ASHP Meeting and Exhibition
- Participate in a Regional Pharmacy Residency Conference
Service
- Use the "best practice" model in the delivery of patient care
- Function as an integral member of the healthcare team
- Employ evidence-based thought processes for the resolution of clinical problems
- Promote and support a safe and effective medication use process
- Serve as leaders of the profession
Teaching
- Our affiliations with Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and Western New England University College of Pharmacy provide exposure to academia
- Educate healthcare providers about "best practice" through written and verbal means
- Effectively communicate teaching points to students in small group, classroom, and practice environments
- Actively participate in patient counseling and other forms of patient teaching
- Attend the pharmacy residents teaching seminar offered in cooperation with MCPHS University

- Implement changes to improve patient care and the medication use system

We participate in the ASHP residency match and are fully accredited. We are affiliated with Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and Western New England University College of Pharmacy.
The PGY1 Community-based Pharmacy Residency conducted by Baystate Medical Center, Springfield, MA is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
