Breast Problem Evaluation, Diagnosis, Treatment & Second Opinions
The Diagnostic Program at the Baystate Breast & Wellness Center ensures that women with breast pain, an abnormal mammogram, or breast lump are evaluated quickly, following the highest quality guidelines.
Our team of breast surgeons, nurse practitioners, and nurse navigators coordinate your testing, evaluation, and follow-up. Fortunately, most breast lumps and abnormal mammograms are benign. However, for those who are found to have a high risk lesion or breast cancer, the next steps of care are meticulously planned.
How the Program Works
Women with breast cancer can be assured that they are receiving the highest quality care from our Baystate Breast Specialists. Breast surgeons, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists work closely with each other to evaluate treatment and discuss options with each patient.
A patient’s treatment recommendations can be reviewed at our weekly Multidisciplinary Breast Pathology Conference. At this meeting, expert radiologists provide second opinions on breast imaging, and breast pathologists review details from the biopsy and surgical specimens under the microscope. Breast surgeons, radiation oncologists, and medical oncologists discuss the best treatment plan.
The group of clinicians provides consensus for your recommended treatment options, including opportunities for participation in clinical trials. Our nurse navigators follow guidelines established to coordinate your follow-up appointments. Plastic surgeons are available to women considering these services.
Instead of having just one specialist reviewing your results and making recommendations for treatment, you have a whole team of experts providing input, assuring you of the best possible outcome. Your care plan is discussed with you, and our team works with you to answer your questions and coordinate the necessary care.
