For Research Participants

Research at Baystate

As an independent academic medical center, Baystate Medical Center is committed to conducting innovative and significant research that benefits the communities we serve and society as a whole.  Our commitment to research brings citizens in the Pioneer Valley access to treatment options that might not otherwise be available in our community as well as the opportunity to contribute to the advancement of scientific and medical knowledge.

Baystate is committed to conducting research in a manner that protects your safety and promotes your rights and welfare.   Research at Baystate is overseen by a comprehensive Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) responsible for coordinating the activities of the institutional components necessary for the safe and ethical conduct of research including the functions of the Institutional Review Boards (IRBs), the committees responsible for the initial and continuing review of research involving humans.  The HRPP promotes best practices in research through education and monitoring of the conduct of research as well as through relationships with the federal oversight system and recognized experts in the field. The Baystate Health HRPP is fully accredited by the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP).

The HRPP and IRBs are interested in hearing your comments, answering your questions and responding to any concerns regarding research. If you would like further information about the types of research performed at the hospital or have suggestions, questions or concerns you may send an email to the Director of the Human Research Protection Program, call 413 794-4356, or send mail to:

Research Opportunities at Baystate

Baystate Medical Center and its Research Investigators conduct research in many different areas of adult and pediatric medicine and surgery including multi-center clinical trials, regional and national collaborations, and locally developed research.  Visit our “Contacts” section for more information on our specialties.

Clinical Trials

Clinical trials (also known as clinical research) are research studies involving human volunteers designed to answer specific health questions. Carefully conducted clinical trials are the fastest and safest ways to find treatments that work in people and other ways to improve health.  ClinicalTrials.gov is an easy-to-use Web site provided by the federal government that provides regularly updated information about clinical trials. You can use this tool to locate specific clinical trials for a wide range of diseases and conditions.  To use this tool to locate clinical trials available at Baystate please click here:  ClinicalTrials.gov.

ResearchMatch

ResearchMatch is a free and secure national registry developed by major academic institutions across the country with the goal of bringing together people who are trying to find research studies and the researchers who are looking for people to participate in their studies.  Baystate Medical Center, through its participation in the Tuft’s Clinical & Translational Science Institute, is pleased to be a member institution and to bring this service to our community.  For more information please visit www.ResearchMatch.org.
