The Business and Medicine Track at Baystate offers residents an in-depth opportunity to be exposed to a wide variety of medical administrative experience. Residents who opt for this elective will:
-
be given an introduction to medical administration
-
have an opportunity to be exposed to a diverse number of role models
-
have a formal mentoring program (if requested)
-
participate in a journal club.
There are numerous medical administrative experiences including hospital based, health system based, group practice based, medical quality, medical management, patient safety, group practice, HMO’s, IPA/PHO, clinical informatics, pharmaceutical and research. The elective is good to expose interested individuals to a wide variety of experiences so that they will in turn be able to determine whether advanced education (MPH, MBA) or a formal career in medical administration is in the resident’s future.
Prior to the one month elective, there will be a preparatory planning session that will allow for the resident to partner with a medical administrator. During this planning session, individuals will select a particular project that will require in-depth, focused work during this elective. The resident will be exposed to the broad areas as outlined above. This project will consume approximately half of the time during this elective. The other half of the elective will be shadowing seasoned physician executives. Some individuals who have selected this elective have continued their projects beyond the elective. Examples of the projects in the past include:
-
implementing the IOM recommendations for patient safety at BMC, partnering with Dr. Evan Benjamin
-
helping to organize the clinical performance of the implementation of a new clinical information system
-
evaluating the role of urgent care availability in Internal Medicine Clinic
-
reviewing and participating in the Hospital/Health System budget process.
If a longitudinal experience is selected, this may lead to an academic publication. All projects are supervised by a member of the Division of General Medicine or the faculty in the Business and Health Track.
