Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship

Program goals include developing our fellows' knowledge and procedural skills to provide high quality care for the acutely ill and injured child. Additionally, the curriculum further enhances the fellows' teaching, research, and administrative skills.

Baystate Medical Center is home to one of the busiest emergency departments in the country, with a 104, 000 patient visits per year. This total includes approximately 25, 000 pediatric visits per year. It is also home to the 110-bed Baystate Children's Hospital.

The location of both facilities on the same campus provides an ideal opportunity for fellows originating from either a pediatric or emergency medicine background to get the complementary training that they need on the same campus as the fellowship.

We have 6 Board Certified PEM faculty who supervise the fellows while training within our pediatric emergency department. Additional rotations within Baystate Medical Center Children's Hospital, include pediatric intensive care, neonatal resuscitation, anesthesia, radiology, inpatient pediatrics, pediatric ambulatory care, and abuse evaluation. Elective time is also available within other pediatric subspecialties.

The clinical curriculum is supplemented by weekly didactic conferences including case based learning sessions, journal clubs, joint emergency medicine/pediatric emergency medicine conferences, and traditional lectures. As prior residency experience varies, the fellow's individual educational needs are also incorporated into the curriculum.

Fellows also benefit from a long tradition of emergency medicine research in our department, and significant research resources, including: a full-time research nurse, a year-round cadre of volunteer research assistants under her supervision, statistical support, and the guidance of faculty with decades of research experience.
