Dr. John Rousou, Chief, Cardiac Surgery Division, will be the Principal Investigator as Baystate joins Brigham & Womens, USC and 6 other satellite sites for the study, "Surgical Interventions for Moderate Ischemic Mitral Regurgitation."
The research will compare health outcomes of patients receiving repair of the mitral valve with moderate leakage at the time of planned coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery vs. those who undergo CABG surgery alone. Baystate will start accepting patients upon IRB approval of the project; the estimated study completion date is June 2012.
Only 21 other institutions in the U.S. and Canada have received this prestigious award.
