Baystate Medical Center, the only academic medical center in Western Massachusetts, prominently integrates medical education and research into its mission of providing the highest quality advanced care to our community.

With our major teaching affiliates, Tufts University School of Medicine and the University of Massachusetts Amherst, we train doctors, medical students, nurses, and many other healthcare professionals who continue their careers at other university research centers and leading medical centers, or in healthcare practices, many right here in the Pioneer Valley.

Research

Our 250 full-time faculty are involved in wide-ranging basic, clinical and translational research that receives some $11 million annually in extramural funding from the National Institutes of Health and other funding agencies.

Education

The “Knowledge Corridor” an extension of the Pioneer Valley south to Hartford and New Haven Connecticut is so named because of the high concentration of technology companies and universities. There are 31 institutions of higher learning in the Knowledge Corridor, including the Five College Consortium of the University of Massachusetts—Amherst, Amherst College, Smith College, Mt. Holyoke College, and Hampshire College. 

Baystate, benefiting from this synergy, has emerged as the region's largest employer with more than 10,000 employees and an economic impact of over $1 billion.
